TheIlluminant 2 is a one-of-a-kind artwork within the collection of Dirk Vaessen. While his work often begins with identity as a philosophical anchor, this piece is rooted in a longing for light — and for illumination in every sense of the word.

Dirk’s masks typically take the form of abstract totems, inviting contemplation of who you are and who you wish to become. TheIlluminant 2, by contrast, emerged from a desire for clarity amidst movement and turbulence. It is an object that holds light — and radiates it.

In this piece, leather no longer carries the structure but instead defines the sculptural form. The framework is made of bronze and metal, bringing a sense of strength and permanence. The result is a solitary beacon of stillness and hope — a source of calm, precisely when and where it is most needed.

TheIlluminant 2 is designed to hold a candle. A removable metal cup is included to protect the leather from direct contact with flame. For safety reasons, the candle should only be used under the supervision of an adult.
