TheIlluminant 1 is a distinctive object within the collection of Dirk Vaessen. Where his work often explores identity as a philosophical foundation, this piece begins with a longing for light – both literal and symbolic.
As evening falls and the candle slowly burns down, the shadow it casts begins to shift and deepen — transforming the surrounding space with quiet movement, like a living presence on the wall.
Dirk’s masks usually take the form of abstract totems that invite reflection on who we are and who we wish to become. TheIlluminant, by contrast, emerged from a desire for clarity in an ever-shifting and restless world. It is an object that holds light — and brings it.
Crafted entirely from naturally tanned leather, it is sculpted through a process that transforms flat material into a three-dimensional presence. Drawing on Dirk’s background in shoemaking, the object is formed using traditional modelling techniques that give it both structure and soul.
The result is a quiet monument: a source of light and calm, exactly when it is needed most.

Over time, the leather will evolve in colour, responding to the temperature, light, and humidity of its surroundings — a living material that grows with you.
TheIlluminant is designed to hold a candle. A removable metal cup is included to protect the leather from direct contact with flame. For safety reasons, the candle should only be used under the supervision of an adult.
