MOTHER’S SPAN

MOTHER’S SPAN explores expansion and connection within the pulse of nature. Crafted from naturally tanned leather, the smooth grain side of the leather is dyed in warm brown tones and carefully polished with beeswax, creating a deep, earthy surface. The inner side is kept light and subtly coloured with coffee grounds, adding depth while preserving openness.

The form unfolds as an open square frame, spreading outward like a flower in bloom. This open structure introduces space and span — a moment where the material opens rather than contains. The work suggests growth not as force, but as allowance.

Material contrasts play a central role: grain and flesh side, density and lightness, structure and openness. The leather records the process through gentle variations in tone and surface, reinforcing the organic character of the piece.
